By the time Friday the 13th: A New Beginning slashed its way into theaters in 1985, the franchise was already a well-oiled machine, churning out a sequel nearly every year. However, this fifth entry remains one of the most divisive, largely due to its decision to shift away from the traditional Jason Voorhees formula and experiment with a psychological approach. While that sounds intriguing on paper, the execution leaves much to be desired, resulting in a film that struggles to balance its slasher roots with a misguided attempt at reinvention.

The story picks up after the events of The Final Chapter (1984), with a now-older Tommy Jarvis (John Shepherd) struggling with the trauma of his past. Sent to a halfway house for troubled teens, Tommy finds himself in a new nightmare when a series of gruesome murders begins, mimicking Jason’s trademark brutality. The film tries to play with audience expectations, teasing whether Tommy himself has snapped under the weight of his past, but the final reveal—spoiler alert—of a Jason copycat killer feels more like a cheap gimmick than a clever twist.

Despite its narrative shortcomings, A New Beginning does have its moments. The kill sequences are still delightfully over-the-top, featuring everything from a brutal machete dismemberment to a flare to the mouth. The film also leans into the sleazy side of ’80s slashers, packing in gratuitous nudity, drug use, and bizarre comedic beats that make for an occasionally entertaining watch. Unfortunately, these moments are often undercut by a cast of thinly drawn, one-note characters who exist solely to be picked off, making it difficult to care about their inevitable fates.

While A New Beginning deserves some credit for attempting to steer the franchise in a fresh direction, it ultimately feels like a misfire. The absence of the real Jason leaves a void that the film can’t quite fill, and its attempt at psychological horror never fully lands. That said, it’s not without its trashy charm, and for fans of the series, it offers enough blood-soaked carnage to be worth revisiting—just don’t expect a Friday the 13th classic.

When Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter slashed its way into theaters in 1984, it was marketed as the definitive conclusion to Jason Voorhees’ reign of terror. Of course, hindsight reveals this “final” chapter was merely the midpoint of a sprawling franchise. Yet, even after 40 years, this fourth installment remains a fan favourite, celebrated for its heightened intensity, memorable characters, and pivotal role in shaping the series’ future.

Tommy Jarvis: A Hero is Born

A key reason The Final Chapter resonates so deeply with fans is the introduction of Tommy Jarvis, played by a young Corey Feldman. Tommy, a precocious horror enthusiast with a knack for special effects makeup, is a rare protagonist who feels as intriguing as Jason himself. Feldman brings an authentic mix of vulnerability and resourcefulness to the role, making Tommy an instantly iconic character.

Tommy’s climactic confrontation with Jason—a battle of wits and willpower—is one of the franchise’s most intense moments. His shocking decision to shave his head and impersonate a younger version of Jason to disorient the killer was both unsettling and ingenious, adding a psychological edge rarely seen in slasher films of the era. This pivotal moment not only cemented Tommy as a standout character but also set the stage for his return in later entries, making him a central figure in the saga.

The Turning Point

By the time The Final Chapter arrived, the Friday the 13th formula was well established: a group of teenagers ventures to Crystal Lake, where they meet gruesome ends at Jason’s hands. However, this installment elevated the franchise in several key ways.

Director Joseph Zito (The Prowler) brought a more polished aesthetic to the film, combining tense, atmospheric build-ups with visceral kill sequences. Tom Savini, returning to provide the special effects after his groundbreaking work on the original film, delivered some of the franchise’s most memorable gore. From Jason’s harpoon impalement to his shocking demise via machete to the face, the kills were as creative as they were brutal, solidifying Jason as an unstoppable force of nature.

The film also marked a tonal shift, balancing the campy thrills of earlier installments with a darker, more serious approach. This wasn’t just another Jason romp—it felt like the franchise was reckoning with its own legacy. The inclusion of Tommy Jarvis and his family introduced a level of emotional investment often absent from slasher films, giving audiences someone to root for beyond mere survival.

Jason’s (Temporary) Swan Song

Perhaps most notably, The Final Chapter marked the (temporary) end of Jason Voorhees as fans knew him. The film’s bold decision to actually kill off Jason in a conclusive and gruesome manner was a major gamble. For many fans, this death felt definitive, a fitting end to a character who had become synonymous with the genre. Of course, Jason would rise again, but this film gave him a sense of finality that added weight to his demise.

Fan Favorite Legacy

Decades later, The Final Chapter continues to stand out as one of the franchise’s most beloved entries. Its blend of suspense, gore, and character-driven storytelling has made it a benchmark for slasher sequels. For many fans, this installment represents the franchise at its peak—a perfect storm of horror elements that capture everything audiences love about Friday the 13th.

Final Thoughts

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter may not have been the end of Jason Voorhees, but it was undeniably a turning point for the franchise. With the introduction of Tommy Jarvis, the escalation of gore and tension, and a climactic showdown that still leaves audiences breathless, this installment remains a testament to why Friday the 13th endures as a cornerstone of horror. Forty years later, it’s clear that The Final Chapter is anything but the end—it’s the moment Jason and his machete became immortal.

There is an inherent fear that we hold deeply of our fellow ‘man’ and the extremes of depravity that we go to away from the confines of urban security. It seems that the further or deeper we go into the backwoods or remote locations, the greater our fear becomes. At the turn of the seventies, now prominent film director Steven Spielberg exposed those fears in the open road, hauling ass from an unknown truck driver across the vast landscape of the US for Duel; John Boorman took the love of adventure and male bonding across the riverways into more dark terrain in Deliverance; and Terence Malik offered up a slice of teenage runaways on a killing spree in South Dakota in Badlands, but it didn’t stop on US soil. In Britain they amped up the fear of folk stories by subjecting its audience to the remote Scottish island of Summerisle in The Wicker Man; and in Australia Peter Weir was serving up some outback disturbance as political commentary for The Cars That Ate Paris. It was a growing trend that was steadily getting darker.

Arguably it was in 1974 that close scrutiny was cast on the unknown and sheltered parts of the country, and a family feasting on travellers to fuel their appetite in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre that would throw turmoil into the mix and slowly craft out the slasher sub-genre. A master of horror, Wes Craven would pick up that agitation baton and run with it for The Hills Have Eyes, casting everyday white American family against a mutant inbred family set in the heart of the Californian desert to really shake us to the core. From here on in, the audience had hillbilly horror to contend with as a new playing field for the genre.

As we etch our way into the late seventies and early 80s, the raw appeal was on show to explore through I Spit On Your Grave; Tourist Trap; and the birth of slasher itself in Friday the 13th. The eighties would then play around with this concept with similar fodder in The Burning; Don’t Go In The Woods; and Just Before Dawn. It wouldn’t be long before the subject would be made lightly and Troma Entertainment didn’t disappoint with the horror comedy, Redneck Zombies to combine this trepidation and mix it with the undead. 

The nineties would prove a lonely trail until we would be taken off the road and onto an unbeaten track in 2003’s Wrong Turn, a film that has somehow spawned six follow up features. Now, this may be a contentious point but it still stands strong twenty years on to me for nostalgic purposes and no amount of tree-leaping naysayers can sway me from this opinion. And while part of my reasoning may swiftly be driven by the casting of Eliza Dushka its heroine (still a Faith fan and not in the Buffy camp), but also with a pre-Dexter Desmond Harrington and a post Clueless Jeremy Sisto in its fold. And that’s not to mention a Queens of the Stone Age track in the soundtrack to complete the auditory reckoning, and some of the team from Stan Winston studios to add the gloss and gore. Sure it’s twee horror, but it continued this trend of hillbilly horror, satiating those needs and passing on the baton again for more comedy visions in Tucker and Dale vs Evil, and full out gross horror in the remake of The Hills Have Eyes by Alexandre Aja, bringing us full circle again. 

The subject is here to stay as long as our fear remains, and in a post COVID world combined with our isolated lives, surviving or not through cyber connections, surely that fear will only grow stronger and thrust us into a whole new realm of revulsion. Hopefully this will pave way for more creativity to force us on the path of destruction and desolation.

Retrospective: Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

Slasher films had been around through the 70s, although they were more commonly associated with snuff films, but when John Carpenter thrust Michael Myers and Halloween into the horror genre, the flame was struck. Two years later, Sean Cunningham teamed up with writer Victor Miller and stoked the fire further to propel slashers into the mainstream and a plethora of similar movies soon followed.

So, it was inevitable that Paramount Pictures would look at the film’s success and look at ways to spawn a franchise… but there was one big problem.

Let me make one thing perfectly clear, at the beginning of my movie, Jason is dead!

When they offered me the script for Part 2, I got the script and Jason was running around and I said, “What are you doing?

If you track that into any kind of timeline, it makes no sense whatsoever.

If the original creators were puzzled, so were the fans, but it wasn’t just the script that was out of whack. There were a number of other conflicts that occurred behind the scenes. Most notably was the return and demise of the films original heroine, Alice played by Adrienne King. King wasn’t shy with her complaints about the production and the way that both her and her character were treated… killing her off in the opening scene supposedly without her knowledge. Those who had come to love her character and her strength in the climax against Jason’s mother Pamela, thought that it was dealt with rather too swiftly.

Another controversial component in-house came with the casting of Jason himself. Let’s forget about the whole sandbag over the head thing which was clearly a lift from The Town That Dreaded Sundown released five years earlier. Instead the issue centred on Warrington Gillette who was given the role of Jason when he failed to win the role of lead counsellor Paul, losing out to John Furey. The only problem was that Warrington at the time wasn’t a stuntman, so the producers had to call in Steve Daskewisz to perform the stunts and debate would strike over who the real Jason was.

Friday the 13th Part 2 was clearly trying to stitch the pieces back together on its path to create a franchise, and arguably were pulling from other movies to inspire or develop this world. Although the creators claimed ignorance, there is a striking similarity to one death scene in the movie to Mario Bava’s 1971 flick, Twitch of the Death Nerve, aka A Bay of Blood (The Surgeons will be taking a look at this movie in more detail for a podcast down the track).

Despite all this, some iconic moments were created.

The introduction of Ginny (Amy Steel) who not only kicked arse as the final girl, but was smart and managed to psyche Jason out by pretending to be dear old Mom. This also brought Betsy Palmer back to resurrect Pamela albeit in dream form.

Also returning from the original movie was Crazy Ralph (Walt Gorney) and with him the wacky old guy character that would become synonymous with the slasher films. Plus the iconic camp fire scares and young school counsellors getting busy before they get whacked, which is a key draw card for the sub-genre. 

Speaking of kills, with the absence of Tom Savini in the makeup and effects department having signed on to make The Burning, another mastro Stan Winston stepped into the scene, only to also be called away for another commitment. Instead Carl Fullerton (Wolfen, The Silence of the Lambs) would more than step up to the plate and deliver some great effects sequences and some of the most memorable kills from the franchise.

It may have been built on some shaky ground with some questionable narrative decisions that are still debated today, but the final result pulled in $21.7 million at the box office. This wasn’t as successful as its predecessor but it was enough for Paramount to call it a win and from the wake of Pamela Voorhees came the birth of Jason. They were still finding their feet in who or what Jason would be and he is more in embryonic stage, but with Director Steve Miner returning again to helm the next instalment alongside producer Frank Mancuso Jr. history was being made and Jason would soon take great strides in the horror film industry.

Matt Frame is a director after our own heart.

Not only does he wear the Friday the 13th franchise on his sleeve, but in Camp Death 3 in 2d, he slices and dices our beloved Jason movies, spilling its entire guts on the campfire and rebuilds as a glorious homage with tongue firmly placed in cheek.

This movie is jam-packed full of overly eccentric characters where the actors are permanently delivering their performances to the max. To some viewers they may find this too grating, but for those that can bear the pace, and don’t mind the wackiness of the shots will no doubt enjoy the ride.

There are plenty of in jokes and nods to both the horror and sci-fi genre especially in the Star Wars realm. In one case, we see the “Jason” character (who in this instance is called Johann Van Damme) in a 74-Z speeder bike chase through wooded terrain with hilarious consequences.

The concept behind Camp Death 3 in 3d is a simple one. Camp counselor Todd Boogjumper intends to reopen Camp Death along with potential love interest Rachel (who harbours a dark past), and his crazed uncle Mel. Lo and behold, Johann Can Damme turns up and joyfully dispatches our campers, who just so happen to be a little unhinged themselves. There’s even a “Crazy Ralph” character in the midst too, which was pretty cool to see.

The highlight though has to be some of the upbeat musical numbers that pop up on occasion in the movie, which adds to the whole surreal style that Frame had intended throughout the film. Chief among them were from Jesus Hernandez Jr. attempting to show a softer side to his tough exterior.

The Diagnosis:

It’s college humour at it highest and most ridiculous. Think Police Academy on crack.

2016 PROVED TO BE quite a big year for Horror films with the successes of Don’t Breathe, The Conjuring 2, and The Witch to name but a few.

But can this year prove to be as fruitful in delighting our senses and twisting our minds?

Let’s take a look at the movies that lie ahead…

Alien: Covenant

Release Date: 18 May
Is it me or is there more hype around this movie than Prometheus?
It might have something to do with the return of our beloved xenonorph and its predatorial instincts that once again see humans in a fight for survival.
Prediction: With Michael Fassbender reprising his role as the ‘synthetic’ David, along with a strong cast, this looks and feels like the Alien franchise is back on form.

Amityville: the Awakening

Release Date: 30 Jun tbc
This marks the 18th entry into the Amityville franchise, which by my reckoning makes this the most in a  series.
This time the story focuses on Belle and her twin siblings, one of whom is comatose until strange paranormal occurrences awaken him.
Prediction: With the movie changing hands through the selling of Miramax plus poor preview screenings have seen this movie delayed on several occasions.
If this movie does see the light of day, I expect that it will be yet another poor addition to the franchise posing the question why bother returning to it at all.

Annabelle 2

Release Date: 10 Aug
The sequel to The Conjuring spin-off that sees the possessed doll wreak havoc on an orphanage.
Prediction: Another weak entry. The plot line seems farcical.

The Belko Experiment

Release Date: 17 Mar
Think of this as Battle Royale set in a high-rise building as 80 participants are told by an unknown voice that they must play a game of kill or be killed.
Prediction: Brought to the screens by the visionary mind of Australia’s Greg McLean (Wolf Creek, The Darkness) this could be a pleasant surprise albeit using familiar territory. Expect a gruesome battle of survival to occur.

The Bye Bye Man

Release Date: 13 Jan tbc
The concept behind this movie sees three college students find themselves stalked by an entity that can take control of your mind simply if you think or say his name.
Prediction: Sounds like a shit version of The Candyman.
Shitty title, shitty premise doesn’t bold well in my opinion, but hey, I’m happy to be proven wrong.

Chucky 7

Release Date: Dec
Not much is known about this movie yet other than writer of the all six instalments and director of the last two, Don Mancini has resurrected the killer doll for another on-screen outing.
Prediction: If this heralds the right kind of comedy this could be the best version since Bride of Chucky.

A Cure For Wellness

Release Date: 16 Mar
When a young executive goes to retrieve his CEO from a wellness centre, he finds himself spiralling into a world of secrets where his own sanity is tested.
Prediction: Director Gore Verbinski can be a bit hit be miss and if we’re honest more miss of late.
Judging by the trailer though, this could well be a return to form and perhaps one of the better horror movies of 2017.

The Dark Tower

Release Date: 27 Jul
The science fantasy western horror book series from the mind of Stephen King gets the movie treatment.
The film in this instance has been described as a ‘quasi-sequel’ to the books.
Prediction: With a lot of big names producing this movie and the likes of Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey taking the leads there is a lot of high expectations on this being a success.
I for one feel that they won’t be disappointed.
A hit that will likely bring more from the universe in further outings.

Flatliners

Release Date: 28 Sep
Again not much has been announced around the details of this movie other than it being a sequel to the 90’s classic with Kiefer Sutherland set to reprise his role of Dr Nelson Wright.
Prediction: This movie sits on the precipice of success or failure.
With Ellen Page attached I have a feeling this could be better than your average flick and could take this franchise into bold new territory and reawaken a tinge of nostalgia. “Today’s a great day to die.”

Friday the 13th

Release Date: 13 Oct
Another reboot is on the horizon marking this as the 13th instalment.
Not much else has been announced other than it being delayed til later in the year.
Prediction: This needs to be delivered with the right blend of humour and horror in order for Jason to truly terrorise the screens again.
I so want this to be a success but I feel like this might be the final nail in Jason’s coffin.

Get Out

Release Date: 24 Feb
A horror satire from the insatiably brilliant mind if Jordan Peele sees Chris, an African-American man, try to escape from an estate where its black residents go missing.
Prediction: The comedy horror hit of the year.

Insidious: The Last Key

Release Date: 30 Oct
The latest chapter of supernatural horror franchise continues this time with James Wan’s previous partner in horror, Leigh Whannel at the helm.
Prediction: Better than the previous outing but not a par on the original.

Friday-the-13th

THE 1980’s WOULD MARK the rise of horror movies, particularly in the homes with the introduction of video rental stores.

Leading the charge would be Friday the 13th, a little known film that with a small budget and with a production company that was willing to market nationwide.

The Film itself owed a lot of its success from a visionary director, Sean Cunningham (Last House On The Left) with a young cast that was willing and eager, plus some of the best blood and gore to have been seen on screen before.

The last of which would be Friday the 13th’s true calling. By teaming up with Special FX guru, Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead) who was and still is ahead of his time when it comes to capturing realistic gore for the screen, Cunningham had blended the perfect recipe of blood, gore and scares that continues to delight generation after generation and spawned a franchise.
