Concluding the 1966 lineup of Hammer Films is The Witches, a chilling tale that delves into the dark world of witchcraft, psychological manipulation, and the fragility of sanity. Directed by Cyril Frankel, this film marks a significant entry in Hammer’s catalogue, blending supernatural horror with psychological depth in a way that resonates with audiences long after its release.

Plot Overview

The Witches follows the story of a schoolteacher, Gwen Mayfield (played by Joan Fontaine), who relocates to a small village in Africa after a traumatic experience involving a cult of witches. As she attempts to start anew, Gwen finds herself embroiled in a web of supernatural intrigue and local superstitions. The villagers harbour a dark secret related to a coven of witches who wield powerful magic, and Gwen’s growing sense of paranoia leads her to question her sanity as she confronts the terrifying realities of witchcraft.

Themes of Fear and Isolation

The film effectively explores themes of fear, isolation, and the struggle for identity in the face of overwhelming circumstances. Gwen’s journey is marked by her attempts to break free from her traumatic past while grappling with the suffocating grip of the village’s secrets. The psychological tension builds as she becomes increasingly paranoid, blurring the lines between reality and illusion.

Visual Style and Atmosphere

Frankel’s direction enhances the film’s eerie atmosphere, using striking visuals and meticulous cinematography to evoke a sense of dread. The contrast between the serene landscape and the sinister undercurrents of witchcraft creates a disquieting backdrop that heightens the tension. Character Development and Performances

Movie Review: Hellbender (2022)

Shudder’s latest movie to hit the streaming platforms Exclusive and Original content is a triage powerhouse of creativity. Written and Directed by John and Zelda Adams, and Toby Poser (the latter of whom also take on leading acting duties) weave a coming-of-age tale of witchery.

Toby and Zelda play the mother-daughter dynamic, secluded in the mountainous range of North America, harbouring a secret that has been passed down from generation to generation. 

Their seclusion from society is for good cause, and the mother (Toby Poser) at first comes across as over-protective and even sinister as early events unfold. She even tries to feed her daughter’s interest in music by forming a rock band consisting of just the two of them. By the stories’ end, we discover that there is a method to the matriarchal madness.

As Izzy (Zelda Adams) ventures further away from her abode and her mother’s grasp, the more she begins to discover herself but at what cost?
Her first encounter is with Amber (Lulu Adams) who unbeknownst to her at the time has snuck into a neighbouring house to use their pool. There is an awkwardness to their encounter, harnessed by Izzy’s own fumbling curiosity. Izzy survives through the help of small talk and some of the quirky facts that she produces but like any dormant threat buried deep beneath the surface, there will be an explosion of emotions and ferocity that she may not be able to contain next time around. As her confidence grows, so does the power she tries to contain within.

The prognosis:

While there are elements that are trying to hinge on the independent mantra, feeling a little strained in its delivery, there are some notable moments that seep to the surface, making this a worthy film. It also demonstrates enough appeal to place the directing trio of Adams, Adams and Poser as names to keep an eye out for.

Both Adams and Poser also deliver strong performances to keep the audience engaged and willing to see how the balance of femininity will unfold.

Movie review: The Wretched

I gotta say that before I begin to cast my thoughts on the film, I am definitely not of the right demographic age-wise. The film is aimed primarily towards Gen Z and with that zest for life comes the rekindled imaginations of yester-year. 

Much like Disturbia did for the Millenials, The Burbs for the X Generation, and Rear Window did for the Baby Boomer generation, we have a protagonist predominantly placed in his home where he witnesses foul play going on next door. In this instance, we follow Ben, “a defiant teenage boy” who has been sent to stay with his father during the summer. His parents are currently going through a divorce which lends some weight as to why Ben has started to go off the rails. During his stay, Ben slowly discovers that all is not as it seems in this marina town, and not only that but appears to be possessed by some weird demonic witch like creature from the woods that we later learn to discover is a cross between Black Annis and the Boo Hag.

There are some genuinely decent moments in here for the hardened soul and the creature fx are believable enough to blend into the landscape, but the fear itself is often all too “twee” and never stirs the heart.

Despite this, the performances and characters are engaging enough for you to care about Ben’s plight with some decent twists in the mix, that on face value surprise and delight, but on closer inspection, doesn’t necessarily add up. Sometimes the MacGuffin is enough to change or suspend disbelief that you forgive its faults, but here they jar and the smoke and mirrors are left in plain sight, shattering any vague illusion that the director was hoping to achieve.

The Prognosis

Another sugar coated saccharine sweet horror film that lives in the shadows of exceptional movies without offering an ounce of originality.

If you like fluffy, light hearted horror, then by all means give this a whirl, but from this writer’s perspective, The Wretched struggles to lift itself above a mediocre horror… just.
